Our last Guest Speaker was: Philip "Flip" Todd

Philip "Flip" Todd, is the president of Todd Communications, the state's largest wholesale book distributor. Todd Communications is an Anchorage, Alaska-based publisher of books, calendars, maps and note cards with Alaska subject matter. In business since 1978, the company also carries more than 2,000 items published by others with Alaska themes ranging from children's books to cook books. It is the state's largest wholesale distributor of books and related materials with warehouses and salespeople in Ketchikan, Juneau, Anchorage, Fairbanks and Nome. It sells to more than 1,000 customers throughout the state.

The company specializes in assisting Alaskans to self-publish many types of printed items by offering professional graphic design and international print brokering services at highly competitive rates. It is particularly knowledgeable and competitive in the area of design and printing of full color materials. It also handles wholesale distribution of these titles in Alaska, throughout the Lower 49 and in foreign countries.

Todd Communications works with Alaska photographers, writers and fine artists to produce the highest possible quality published materials of interest to Alaskans and tourists.

Ralph Williams Memorial Speculative Fiction Contest to award $5,000 to best entry

The Alaska Writers Guild welcomes entries for the first Ralph Williams Prize for Speculative Fiction, a contest in memory of Alaska science fiction writer Ralph Williams. The Grand Prize is $5,000.

The Ralph Williams Prize for Speculative Fiction is offered in honor of a great Alaskan. Ralph Williams -- a federal employee, carpenter, fisherman, hunter, writer and family man -- contributed in his short life to the development of science fiction as a respected genre, although his own development as a writer was cut unexpectedly short. It is hoped that through this prize his commitment to quality writing, intelligent plots and meaningful themes will continue to flourish through other hands.

For more information, see the guidelines for the Ralph Williams Prize for Speculative Fiction, or use the links at left to download the submission information.

2008 Alaska Speculative Fiction Conference is rapidly approaching

After completing a successful writers workshop in August, the Alaska Writers Guild is pleased to announce the Alaska Speculative Fiction Conference, to be held in Anchorage, October 1-5, 2008.
